2012 Yukon Bird Walks

It’s that time of year again; the Yukon Bird Club has sent out this years’ field trip schedule!

Mark them down on your calendars; they are a great excuse to get yourself outdoors to enjoy the Yukon and its bird life in all its glory.

Sunday April 22: North Alaska Hwy Shrike & Bluebird Tour with Boris Dobrowolsky. Meet at Porter Creek Super A on the Alaska Hwy at 6:30 p.m. (~3 hrs).

NEW! Saturday April 28: Tagish– Catch early migrants at California Beach with Tagish birder Shyloh Van Delft. Meet at S.S. Klondike at 2:30 p.m. or 3:45 p.m. at the Tagish Bridge Rest Area(~1.5 hrs).

NEW! Tuesday May 1: Explore the varied ecosystems of the Yukon Wildlife Preserve with Chris Wilkinson. This is Chris’ 4th year at the Preserve and during this period, he’s seen a great array of birds. Highlighted will be water and shorebirds, but expect some raptors, and with any luck we may even glimpse an owl. Entrance fee will be $7 for Preserve non-members. Meet at Porter Creek Super A at 5:30 (~2 hrs).

Thursday May 3: Ducks and Shorebirds of Quartz Road Wetland with biologist Jim Hawkings. Bring a spotting scope if you have one, or share with the leader as the distant gull colonies can reveal surprises. Meet at Boston Pizza parking lot at 5:30 p.m. (~1.5 hrs).

Sunday May 6: Tagish-Carcross Birding Tour – This popular tour lead by Clive Osborne is sure to add new birds to your life list! Bring a pencil and lunch. Call 667-6976 for info. Three meeting locations are possible: 9 a.m. at S.S. Klondike, 10 a.m. at Gazebo across from Montana Services in Carcross, and 1:30 p.m. at Tagish Bridge rest area (~6‑7 hrs).

Friday May 11: Carcross – Dusky Grouse hike on Nares Mountain with Dan Kemble. Some hiking along the ridge is rewarded by spectacular views, after we’ve stopped at Bear Camp and shared some nosh. Bring good hiking footwear and food. For info, phone Dan at 821-3461. Meet at the gazebo across from Montana Services at 6:30 p.m. (~3 hrs).

Friday–Sunday, May 11–13: Faro Sheep and Crane Viewing Festival – Sponsored by the Town of Faro. For more information call 994-2728.

Sunday May 13: Faro Festival Field Trip – Join the Yukon Bird Club field trip as part of this fun and informative weekend. Meet Mary Whitley at Faro’s Recreation Centre on Campbell Street at 10 a.m. (~1.5 hrs).

Saturday May 12: International Migratory Bird Day –Spring Migration Count. Participate in this annual “Spring round-up”. For more details, contact yukonbirdclub@gmail.com.

Tuesday May 15: Explore birds along Fish Lake Road with Ione Christensen. Meet either at the S.S. Klondike at 6 p.m., or at Porter Creek Super A at 6:30 p.m. (~2 hrs).

Thursday May 17: An evening river stroll with the birds on the Millennium Trail. Meet Jenny Trapnell at the Fish Ladder, near the dam, at 6:30 p.m. (~2hrs).

NEW! Thursday May 17: Haines Junction – Discover birding in the best real estate in the Junction. Call trip leader Sarah Davidson at (867)634 2884 for details. Meet at Day-use area by the Dezadeash River at 7:30 p.m.(~2 hrs).

Saturday May 26: Mayo – Bird identification walk with biologist Mark O’Donoghue. Call 996-2529 for details. Meet at Mayo’s 5-Mile Lake campground at 8:30 a.m. (~2-3 hrs).

Sunday May 20: Wake up with the birds! Songs and calls of McIntyre Creek songbirds with Pam Sinclair. Meet in Porter Creek at the Super A at 7:30 a.m. (~3-4hrs).

NEW! Wednesday May 23: Old Crow – Discoverbirds around Old Crow with Leila Sumi. Itinerary subject to weather. For details contact Leila 966‑3033 or leilasumi@gmail.com. Meet at House 950 at 6:30 p.m. and return for tea and sweets afterwards (~1.5 hrs).

NEW!Wednesday May 23: Dawson City – Birdwalk and ferry ride to the Yukon River campground with Sebastian Jones. For details contactsebastian@northwestel.net. Meet at Dawson’s Visitor Information Centre at 5:30 p.m. (~2-3 hrs).

Thursday May 24: Judas Creek Migration Finalé – one of the season’s highlights at a migratory hot spot! Meet trip leader Jim Hawkings at the S.S. Klondike at 5:30 p.m. (~3 hrs).

Thursday May 24: Watson Lake – Spring birding at Wye Lake with Susan Drury. For details call 536-2996 or email sdrury@northwestel.net.Meet at the cabin at First Wye Lake Park at 6:30 p.m. (~1.5 hrs).

Friday-Saturday, May 25-26, 5 p.m. to 5 p.m. ANNUAL YUKON BIRDATHON – Make this your first or favourite birding event! Learn about birds and raise funds for bird conservation and education. Watch for ads! Coordinated by Jim Hawkings, 668-2639.

NEW! Saturday June 2: Explore the unique habitats around Mary Lake with Wendy Nixon. Meet at the S.S. Klondike at 8:30 a.m. or the mailboxes on Fireweed Drive at 9 a.m. (~2 hrs).

Monday June 4: Join Mary Whitley on the annual field trip to the well-loved Paddy’s Pond in Hillcrest. Meet Mary outside the SKKY hotel, across from the airport, at 5:30 p.m. (~1.5 hrs).

Friday June 8: Come explore the duck ponds near Yukon College with biologist Katie Aitken. Meet at the Yukon College, at the West end of the main student parking lot, at 7 p.m. For details, contact Katie at668-8898 or kaitken@yukoncollege.yk.ca (~1-2 hrs).

Friday-Sunday June 8-10: Tombstone Park’s Weekend on the Wing – A northern birding festival in this beautiful Territorial Park. Sponsored by Friends of Dempster Country in partnership with Yukon Parks. NEW! Saturday June 16: Alpine Butterflies on Grey Mountain’s Ridge with butterfly aficionado André Langlois. Dress in layers and bring a snack and hydration. Pre-register by emailing ybcfieldtrips@gmail.com as it could be rain-checked (literally) to the 17th. Meet at the parking lot at the bottom of Grey Mountain rd at 1:15 p.m. (~3 hrs).

NEW! Saturday June 30: Get to know the birds, dragonflies, and aquatic insects, of Hidden Lakes with Entomologist Syd Cannings. For info, call Syd at 335-6633. Meet at the Fish Ladder, near the dam in Riverdale, at 1 p.m.(~2 hrs).

Sunday September 2: Discover fall migration at Schwatka Lake and Hidden Lakes with Ione Christensen. Meet at the S.S. Klondike at 9:30 a.m. (~2-3hrs).

Saturday September 8: Swan Lake Day Trip. Scout for lingering late season migrants at this birding hotspot. Bring waterproof footwear, layered clothing, and a lunch. This is a full day-trip with lots of walking. Pre‑register by emailing ybcfieldtrips@gmail.com to coordinate transportation.

Sunday September 9: See waterfowl and shorebirds at the scenic (really!) Whitehorse Sewage Lagoons. Meet Devon Yacura at the S.S. Klondike at 9:30 a.m. (~3-4 hrs).

Sunday September 23: Explore Lake Laberge with the one and only Ione Christensen. Dress warmly, wear boots, and bring a lunch. Meet at the Porter Creek Super A at 9:30 a.m. (~5 hrs).
