The Yukon Bird Club is pleased to welcome everyone to enjoy the many field trips and events lined up for the coming year.

With bird walks in 11 different Yukon communities, there are many outstanding opportunities to see spectacular birds and learn more about their habitats throughout the Territory.

Car-pooling from meeting points is encouraged

Spring

 

Thursday 17 April: Whitehorse – Shrikes & Bluebirds on the North Klondike Hwy with Boris Dobrowolsky. Meet at Porter Creek Super A at 6:30pm. (3 hrs)

 

Friday 25 April: Carcross – Nares Mountain Dusky Grouse hike with Dan Kemble. Meet at the gazebo across from Montana Services at 6:30pm. (3 hrs)

 

Saturday 26 April: Tagish – Early spring migrants along the 6-Mile River with Shyloh van Delft. Meet at the Tagish Bridge rest area at 1pm. (2 hrs)

 

Tuesday 29 April: Whitehorse – Rusty Blackbird Migration Blitz at local habitats with Pam Sinclair. Meet at the Porter Creek Super A at 6pm. (2 hrs)

 

Sunday 4 May: Carcross/Tagish – Birding tour with Clive Osborne. Meet at the SS. Klondike at 9am; or the Tagish Bridge rest area at 12pm. (5 hrs)

 

Sunday 4 May: Faro – Sheep & Crane Fest bird walk with Carrie McClelland. Meet at the Campbell Region Interpretive Centre at 9:30am. (2 hrs)

 

Thursday 8 May: Whitehorse – Waterbirds of the Quartz Road Wetland with Jim Hawkings. Meet at Boston Pizza at 5:30pm. (1.5 hrs)

 

Saturday 10 May: Carcross – Scenic birding with Joel Luet. Meet at the Carcross Commons at 1pm. (2 hrs)

Tuesday 13 May: Whitehorse – Birding the Fish Lake Road with Ione Christensen. Meet at the Porter Creek Super A at 6pm. (2 hrs)

 

Wednesday 14 May: Haines Junction – Spring migration with Sarah Davidson. Meet at the Frosty Freeze at 7pm. (2 hrs)

 

Thursday 15 May: Yukon Wildlife Preserve – Spring birding with Jake Paleczny and friends. Meet at the Wildlife Preserve at 6pm. (2 hrs). $7 entrance fee.

 

Saturday 17 May: Henderson’s Corner (Dawson) – A Klondike bird walk with Cynthia Hunt. Meet at the Henderson’s Corner north entrance at 10am. (2 hrs)

 

Tuesday 20 May: Whitehorse – Songbirds of Paddy’s Pond in Hillcrest with Mary Whitley. Meet at the SKKY hotel at 5:30pm. (2 hrs)

 

Thursday 22 May: Whitehorse – Judas Creek Migration Spectacle with Jim Hawkings! Meet at the SS Klondike at 5:30pm. (3.5 hrs)

 

Saturday 24 May: Carmacks – Discover spring birds with Jessica Condon. Meet at the Tantalus School parking lot at 10am. (2hrs)

 

Saturday 24 May: Whitehorse – “Under-30s” youth bird walk to McIntyre Creek with Adam Perrier, Shyloh van Delft, & Nick Guenette. Meet at the Porter Creek Super A at 6:30pm. (2 hrs)

 

Saturday 24 May: Mayo – Join biologist Mark O’Donoghue on a spring bird walk. Meet at 5-Mile Lake campground at 8:30am. (3 hrs)

 

Sunday 25 May: Whitehorse – McIntyre Creek Birdsong Workshop with Pam Sinclair. Meet at the Porter Creek Super A at 7:30am. (3 hrs)

Wednesday 28 May: Watson Lake – Waterbirds of Wye Lake with Susan Drury and Jenny Skelton. Meet at the First Wye Lake Park cabin at 6:30pm. (2 hrs)

Summer

 

Friday 6 June: Whitehorse – Explore the forest and ponds along McIntyre Creek near Yukon College with Katie Aitken. This walk involves a few hills. Meet at the student parking lot at 6:30pm. (2 hrs)

 

Saturday 7 June: Upper Liard – Summer songbirds at Albert Creek with Ted Murphy-Kelly. Meet at the banding station at 7:30am. (2hrs)

 

Sunday 8 June: Whitehorse – Enjoy the forest and wetlands of Mary Lake with Wendy Nixon. Meet at the SS. Klondike at 8:30am or the Fireweed Drive mailboxes at 9am. (2 hrs)

 

Friday-Sunday 6-8 June: Tombstone Territorial Park. Weekend on the Wing! A northern birding festival – a great chance to see Surfbird, Long-tailed Jaeger, Smith’s Longspur, & Northern Wheatear. Hosted at Tombstone Campground, km 71 on the Dempster Highway.  Sponsored by Friends of Dempster Country & Yukon Parks. For more info contact friendsofdempster@gmail.com

 

Wednesday 11 June: Whitehorse – Take in this riverside stroll along the Millennium Trail with Jenny Trapnell. Meet at the Fish Ladder in Riverdale at 6:30pm. Wheelchair accessible. (2 hrs)

 

Sunday 22 June: Dawson City – Experience the summer birds of this historic town with Sebastian Jones. Meet at the Dawson Visitor Information Centre at 5:30pm. (2 hrs)

Sunday 7 September: Whitehorse – Discover fall migration at Schwatka Lake and Hidden Lakes with Ione Christensen. Meet at the SS Klondike at 10am. (2.5 hrs)

 

Saturday 13 September: Teslin – Join this bird walk around town with Ben Schonewille and Jukka Jantunen. Meet at the Yukon Motel at 3pm. (2 hrs)

 

Sunday 21 September: Whitehorse – Birding the Whitehorse sewage ponds with Devon Yacura. Meet at the SS. Klondike at 10am. (2 hrs)

 

Saturday 11 October: Whitehorse – Loon migration spectacular on Marsh Lake with Boris Dobrowolsky. Meet at the SS. Klondike at 10am. Dress warm and bring a lunch. (4 hrs)

 

Wednesday 26 November: Whitehorse – What’s on the river? Take a lunch-time stroll across the Millennium foot-bridge with Cameron Eckert to look for lingering ducks and robins. Meet at the Fish Ladder at 12pm. Dress warm!! (<1hr)
